Ceramics

Ceramics at
Odder Højskole

The foundation of ceramics lies in understanding the materials and techniques. That’s why you’ll get hands-on experience with most shaping methods, such as wheel throwing, slab building, coiling, and extruding. At the same time, you’ll receive both practical and theoretical instruction in decoration, glazing, and firing.

The more knowledge and experience you gain with ceramics, the more freedom you have to develop your own artistic expression. The aesthetic dimension is ever-present, and your work in the studio will enhance your understanding of form. You’ll learn to observe, analyze, and interpret a variety of ceramic styles and objects.

Craftsmanship and Cozy Atmosphere

Odder Folk High School’s ceramics studio is full of creative energy and cozy vibes – an ideal space for artistic creation. We have two electric kilns, which you’ll learn to load and unload. You’ll be introduced to various firing techniques – from outdoor raku firing, with its shiny, unique, or unpredictable glazes, to more controlled firings in the electric kilns.

Ceramics is a subject you can never truly finish mastering. With curiosity and creativity, we venture together into the world of clay. Along the way, you’ll face choices and opportunities, making this one of art’s most fascinating journeys – from holding a lump of raw clay in your hands to the thrilling moment of opening the kiln and seeing the finished piece.

A Future with Clay?

Ceramics at Odder Folk High School is for everyone – both beginners and seasoned makers seeking fresh inspiration. The course includes reflection, excursions, and an introduction to the contemporary ceramic scene. That’s why we place great emphasis on collaborating with the ceramic community across the country, including educational institutions, art galleries, and museums.

In short, we take ceramics seriously – but we also enjoy the cozy atmosphere, the inspiring conversations, and the warmth of a well-loved studio.
