In Gaming, we take an almost archaeological approach as we explore the history of computer games. We dive into plenty of classic retro games and examine gaming’s cultural, social, and technological impact.

We look at how the socio-cultural significance of gaming has evolved over time. For example, a game like Minecraft gave rise to communities that built impressive creations within the game’s own framework. In many other games, marketplaces have developed where players can buy and sell items like skins for significant sums. This shows how gaming has become both a personal expression and a community-driven marker of identity.

Video Games as Drivers of Social Change

We trace technological progress through the evolution of graphics, revealing how broader technological developments in society run parallel with the visual styles of games. Gaming is even connected to institutions like the US military, which uses software based on game technology to train pilots.

Finally, we dive into the narratives behind the storytelling that make gaming a mirror of society. Starting with the Cold War era—where American heroes were often depicted as large and heroic, while Russian troops appeared robotic and menacing—we follow the story all the way to modern games, which reflect current social trends, such as the increasing presence of female protagonists.
